Ethos Pathos Logos Worksheet: Scavenger Hunt:

This ethos pathos logos worksheet provides students the opportunity to practice working with ethos pathos logos outside of the English classroom. This activity is meant to be assigned for homework. Students look for examples of each rhetorical appeal in their everyday lives and track these examples within this ethos pathos logos worksheet.  Students are asked to track the 3 appeals used by their teachers, peers, friends, and families, and do so on a structured printout ethos pathos logos worksheet. Students must gather two examples of appeals to ethos, pathos, or logos from each class period (outside of your class period), as well as two appeals they hear during lunch, while at home, and/or during sports practice/after-school activities. They will track these appeals over one to two weeks. This is a fun ethos pathos logos activity for students and each of my class periods report having enjoyed the experience. They even shared that they were more engaged in other classes because they were intently listening for ethos pathos and logos. ;) Plus, this activity helps students make the connection that rhetorical appeals exist in their own lives.

2 Fun Ethos Pathos Logos Practice Worksheets

These two fun ethos pathos logos activities can be completed in class or as homework and were created to give your students continued practice of identifying and differentiating between ethos, pathos, and logos. Each worksheet makes ethos pathos logos fun because it gets students to connect to their learning: Each prompt is relatable to students' lives and humorous so that students stay invested in each activity. Each lesson has two parts: first students read the statement and determine the appeal. Afterward, they write a rationale to demonstrate their understanding of the appeal. I have found that these ethos pathos logos worksheets are very supportive of my students’ learning of ethos, pathos, and logos because writing the rationale provides them the opportunity to process their understanding in a deeper way. Students are asked to fully explain with evidence from the statement, why that statement is ethos pathos or logos and this step helps them demonstrate mastery of each rhetorical appeal. Rubrics and answer keys are included.

4  Highlighter Practice Activities & Paragraph Writing Activity: Ethos Pathos Logos

Students closely review four humorous letters written from the perspective of a student to their teacher. In each letter, the student attempts to convince their teacher to put a pause on assigning homework. As your students read each letter, they will highlight appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos in a particular color. After highlighting each letter, students then analyze the effectiveness of each argument by completing a series of analytical questions that ask students to engage with the author's use of ethos pathos logos in a more meaningful way. For instance, students are asked to determine the tone of each passage, support their responses using textual evidence, explore the effectiveness of each of the arguments, describe how the argument can be improved, and more! Every ethos pathos logos activity included is designed to not only help students identify ethos pathos logos but also practice critical thinking to ensure they demonstrate mastery of ethos,  pathos, and logos. After completing each of the four highlighting ethos pathos logos worksheets, students then write a paragraph where they compare the strategies used in each of the four letters. Students determine the most effective argument and back their claims with evidence from each of the texts. This final assignment allows students to synthesize their understanding of ethos pathos logos and demonstrate their learning. Rubrics and answer keys are included.

    3 Ethos Pathos Logos Quizzes

This bundle includes 3 multiple-choice, 10-question ethos pathos logos quizzes that include digital and printable versions with answer keys. The included Google Forms version saves you time by instantly grading your students' quizzes upon completion. These quizzes are compatible with Google Classroom. I like to quiz my students throughout the unit to monitor their progress. Each quiz tests students by asking them to identify examples of ethos, pathos, and logos as well as define each appeal and determine its purpose. Many questions provide students with statements and ask them to determine if the statement appeals to ethos pathos or logos. All questions are multiple-choice to make grading quick and easy.

Final Assessment: Ethos Pathos Logos Digital Brochure Research Project

This is the final assessment of this unit. This creative project provides students the opportunity to demonstrate their argumentative writing skills using ethos, pathos, and logos to back their claims. I created this project as an alternative to an argumentative essay so that students could practice writing skills, but in a much more fun way. During this week long project, students create a digital brochure about a topic of their interest. Students complete a planning page outline that has them develop a specific claim about their topic, and they conduct research to back their claims. The 40-page slideshow takes students step-by-step through the project so that they are guided through the entire process. After completing their planning page, students then create a brochure about their research where they must incorporate appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos to prove their claims. Each lesson activity is highly structured so that students are successful when choosing a topic, conducting research, creating their brochure, and editing and revising their brochure. Students enjoy the creative freedom this project allows them and you will be impressed by their interest in creating a professional-looking brochure. :)

Gallery Walk & Presentation Feedback Form for any Project

This is a great resource I use anytime I have students participate in a gallery walk activity. I value gallery walks in the classroom because they provide a great opportunity for students to celebrate, admire, and learn from the work of their peers. I have students complete a gallery walk after they finish both minor and major visual projects. Since students move freely around the classroom during a gallery-walk, while evaluating a project created by their peers, it can sometimes be a little chaotic! To bring in a bit more structure and learning, while also keeping the socializing to a minimum, I have them complete this chart. This activity is meant to be paired with the Ethos Pathos Logos Create an Advertisement Project and with the final assessment: Digital Brochure Research Project. Plus, you can use it with ANY project your students complete moving forward. :)

All items in this Ethos Pathos Logos Bundle were created using Google Docs. or Google Slides.

There is a combination of digital and printable activities. The note-taking guide activities are intended for printable use only.

Rubrics and answer keys are included when applicable.

This bundle was created to make your life easier. :)

The ethos pathos logos activities included in this bundle are vetted by my students in my tenth-grade English classroom. Each activity is engaging and meant to bring FUN into your English classroom. Everything you need to teach a successful ethos pathos logos/ rhetorical analysis unit is included in this purchase!
