Establishing Math Talks Routines (Number Talks)

Maths Talk Routines are a specific type of mathematical conversation;

• The reference to ‘routines’ emphasises their common structure and intended regularity; and
• While there are different types of Maths Talks, they share a basic format.

Maths Talks provide students with opportunities to:

• Notice structure, patterns and relationships;
• Clarify their own thinking;
• Test strategies to see if they are mathematically logical;
• Build a repertoire of efficient strategies;
• Investigate and apply mathematical relationships;
• Develop their repertoire and use of mathematical language; and
• Discover and develop generalisations.
