What educators are saying

My sixth graders did not understand how or why planning mattered. These activities helped them appreciate the need for planning, and they love anything in the stations format.
The stations were really a nice way to break away from the slide show presentation of wring an essay.

Description

Use these stations so students will slow down and focus on the planning and preparation that should go into the early stages of the writing process.

We know how important the writing process is, but many students will try to skip to the end; this can result in poorly organized and developed essays. These stations are meant to be used after you have introduced a persuasive, argumentative or expository essay, and students have completed a rough outline. Then, the next day, they will move through the following stations:

1. Finding Your Focus
2. Getting It All Organized
3. Developing Your Ideas
4. Playing with Language
5. Planning an Introduction & Conclusion
6. Getting Peer Feedback

Students will move around each station -- the order doesn't matter -- and consider the different elements that go into planning a well-written essay. Once they have finished, they will be ready to write a focused, organized and well developed draft. Once they have completed their drafts, you might like to try my Essay Revision Stations .
