This saved my life when I had a substitute teacher. It meshed well with my U.S. History course content.
I didn't end up using this assignment simply because I ran out of time, but it looks really fun and engaging! When I am in a better spot, timing wise, I will certainly be using this resource!

Description

This escape room is so much fun! The students will solve four clues that lead them to find a real Civil War Confederate spy (Rose Greenhow). All of the clues are editable, so you can revise and make this perfect for your own classroom. This lesson has students practice decoding skills, close reading, and point of view. They are not pretending to be people from the Civil War - instead, they are using their modern skills to sift through primary sources.

This lesson fits perfectly with a Unit about the Civil War, and it's great as an end of the year activity. There are no breakout boxes or locks required, just some big envelopes!

There are 5 clues they must solve to escape and 4 that involve using real strategies that the spy actually employed during the Civil War.

Clue 1 - This clue tests student understanding of the concept of “point of view” in Social Studies. The students need to figure out that three of the documents were written by Confederates. They will then figure out a code that leads them to a location in the room.

Clue 2 - For this clue, the students need to decode some letters from an actual cipher written by Rose Greenhow. Once they decode the cipher, they are directed to unscramble some letters to lead them to their next location.

Clue 3 - For this clue, students were work through a Morse Code clue on a hand fan (just like Rose Greenhow) that leads them to their next location.

Clue 4- For this clue, the students need to closely read a 1-page article about Rose Greenhow, and figure out which objects she used to transfer messages. Once that had been deciphered, the students then need to put the remaining letters in the correct order.

All of the information in the escape room is based on the life of Rose Greenhow, an actual Confederate spy.

Everything you need is included in this purchase! Just print and teach!
