* This is part of my Linear Equations Unit

This 2-day lesson includes 4 pages of guided notes and two 2-page assignments.

Students learn about parallel and perpendicular lines in the order below. They will:

- Observe that parallel lines have the same slope

- Write linear equations when given a point and a line parallel

- Check their answers graphically to understand what they have actually done

- Apply this skill to horizontal and vertical lines

On day two, they will:

- Discover that perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes

- Practice writing opposite reciprocal fractions

- Write linear equations when given a point and a perpendicular line

- Check their answers graphically to understand what they have actually done

- Apply this skill to horizontal and vertical lines

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
Construct linear and exponential functions, including arithmetic and geometric sequences, given a graph, a description of a relationship, or two input-output pairs (include reading these from a table).
Prove the slope criteria for parallel and perpendicular lines and use them to solve geometric problems (e.g., find the equation of a line parallel or perpendicular to a given line that passes through a given point).
