Description

Enslaved African Americans played an important role in the Revolutionary War. Teach your students WHY slaves fought for both the colonists and the British, WHAT motivated them, and HOW African Americans were betrayed afterwards by both white colonists and the British alike.

This complete lesson includes:

  • A PowerPoint presentation with period graphics and art
  • A 1-page graphic organizer for guided notes
  • An exit ticket to check student comprehension & critical thinking

Use this lesson in any US History course that prioritizes a critical lens of history, Black history, history of white supremacy, anti-racist social studies, social justice curriculum, or multiple perspectives on history.

This lesson was originally used with a 7th grade US History class, but can be adapted for use with many grade levels. The graphic organizer guided notes makes it great for students with IEPs, ELLs (English Language Learners), and all levels of middle school or early high school.
