What educators are saying

This resource is awesome. This is comprehensive and it assesses so many aspects of the English language. Thank you so much.

Description

This comprehensive tool aims to gauge the vocabulary proficiency of newcomers through a diverse set of topics presented via flashcards. These flashcards encompass letter/sound recognition, familiar words, everyday vocabulary, picture chats to enhance oral language, and basic mathematical skills.

In the assessment process, teachers can employ the flashcards or provide students with templates to identify real-life images, all while recording their responses. The flashcards serve a dual purpose, not only for assessment but also for building vocabulary.

The covered topics include:

  • Student profiling (including likes/dislikes)
  • Speaking and Listening - four picture chats (Family gathering, 2 boys at the park, Family eating together, Family ride).
  • Letter Identification and Word Recognition.
  • Vocabulary Assessment (family, school items, family, animals, insects, body parts, clothes, feelings/emotions, action words, food, fruit/vegetables, weather, pronouns, colours/colors and prepositions/directional language.
  • Math Assessment – number recognition, days of the week, months of the year, Calculation Strategies, and 2D and 3D Shapes/Objects.
  • Teacher's Notes – ELL in the Mainstream, overcoming English barriers, effective strategies for comprehension, inclusiveness for ELL students, and addressing mispronunciation and writing strategies for ELL students.

By employing this vocabulary assessment and testing resource, educators can thoroughly evaluate the language skills of new arrivals, pinpoint areas for improvement, and tailor instruction to effectively support their language development.
