Endangered Species Expert - Project Based Learning

This project is designed to help students build their research, analysis and synthesis skills while learning about an endangered species that interests them. As students become the class expert for their species, they will exercise reading, writing, grammar, science and art skills as well as build experience with long-term planning and the organization required to complete a multi-step project by a deadline.

THE SIX STEPS INCLUDED IN THIS PROJECT ARE:

Select A Species
Students select one of 48 endangered species to become an expert on. They design a research folder to keep their materials organized and receive a project rubric and checklist.

Become An Expert
Students complete a research log that will guide them in answering six critical questions:
• How are the physical features of this species adapted to the environment where it lives?
• If this species were relocated to a different living environment, which new environment would have the greatest impact on this species’ behaviors?
• What contrasts do you notice between the predators for this species and the prey for this species?
• Create a diagram that shows the critical stages of this species’ life cycle. Which stage of the life cycle is most impacted by environmental threats?
• What facts support the claim that this species is endangered?
• What solutions can you offer to protect this species from becoming extinct?

Create A Book
Students synthesize the knowledge gather during the research phase to create an illustrated book that features the answers to these six critical questions.

Design A Collage
Students flex their creative muscle as they design an imaginative mixed media collage that shows them “interacting” with their species.

Write A Poem
Students review grammar concepts as they write a poem using a template calling for specific parts of speech. Their final poem will creatively describe the important behaviors, physical features and habitat features for their species.

Build A Potnimal
Students build a potanimal (potato animal) to model the important physical features of the species they research.
