Endangered Animals

This packet will help your kindergarten and first grade students learn, understand, and practice using the science terms used when talking about endangered animals. It also will provide you with resources to make your unit come to life. By integrating science and nonfiction into your language lessons, you not only create an enthusiasm in your students, but you can create the "hook" you need to engage even the most reluctant learners.

This packet includes many guided reading resources including: student readers, flip books, interactive notebook resources, emergent readers, and MORE! The activities are differentiated so that all of your learners can enjoy learning about endangered animals throughout your unit of study. It also includes: student vocabulary books, center activities, real life pictures, recording pages, fully written out 5-E lesson plans, science experiments, art projects, STEM activities, cultural extensions, and more!

As I was creating this packet, I only began to realize how immense the topic of endangered animals is. One website said that there are over 16,000 endangered animals. In order to create a packet that students would be interested in and enjoy, as well as hit the standards, I decided to organize the unit by specific continents. You will notice that I have included MANY pictures and posters for you to use as you study the unit. You will be able to choose the animals that your students are most interested in.

There are many opportunities for your students to use this engaging topic to research and write about what they are learning. The packet includes flip book templates for each continent, interactive notebook activities, recording pages, mini books, and more!

There are over 30 lesson plans for you to use while teaching this unit.
Lessons include:

Lesson 1: What is an endangered animal?
Lesson 2: Where do endangered animals live?
Lessons 3-7: The animals of Africa (lions, elephants, Ethiopian wolves, and Grevy's Zebras)
Lessons 8-11: The animals of Asia (pandas, red pandas, and Asian elephants)
Lessons 12-15: The animals of Australia (green and golden bell frogs, koalas, tasmanian devils)
Lessons 16-19: The animals of North America (cougars, polar bears, ocelots, and grizzly bears)
Lessons 20-23: The animals of South America (long-tailed otters, Amazonian manatees, golden lion tamarins)
Lessons 24-27: The animals or Europe (Iberian lynx, monk seals, and Saiga antelopes)
Lessons 28-31: The animals of Antarctica (humpback whales, emperor penguins, and adelie penguins)

Additional cultural lessons and activities on the Masai tribe in Africa and Australian aboriginals.

All lessons are presented in the 5-E format. (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate) They are written out step by step! Each lesson also comes with beautiful pictures and engaging activities to help your children understand the objectives in a hands-on way. Many of the lessons also contain links to videos and resources to use while teaching the lesson!
