Description

In this engaging and thought-provoking activity, students will delve into meaningful discussions about issues that are relevant to them and brainstorm ways to campaign for action towards these issues.

I CHOSE TO FOCUS ON MALALA YOUSAFZAI and her campaign for girls education, but you can choose to focus on any other figure that you feel aligns better to the lesson! Feel free to adapt the lesson to your own liking!

The activity is divided into two sections, each supported by different technologies to enhance student engagement and collaboration.

✨ Section 1: ✨

Discussion on Relevant Issues (Supported by Padlet) Students will begin by participating in a lively discussion using Padlet, a versatile digital tool that fosters collaboration and creativity. Through Padlet, students will share their thoughts on which issues they believe are relevant to them and why these issues are important to campaign for action. They can post their ideas in the form of virtual post-it notes, selecting colors and fonts to personalize their contributions. Additionally, students can react, vote, and comment on each other's posts, encouraging a dynamic exchange of perspectives.

This section serves multiple purposes:

  • Students have the opportunity to research across subject boundaries as they explore various topics related to social studies and other areas of interest.
  • Digital synthesizing and collaborating skills are practiced as students engage in meaningful discussions and share their insights.
  • Students take on the role of teachers as they inform, inspire, and support their peers with their contributions to the discussion.
  • Most importantly, this section empowers students to have a voice and advocate for issues they find relevant, fostering critical thinking and active citizenship.

✨ Section 2:

Campaigning for Change on Instagram. In this section, students will apply their insights and reflections from the discussion to create a post for Instagram aimed at raising awareness about their chosen issue. Using the inspiration from their discussions and readings, students will craft a visually appealing and impactful post that effectively communicates the importance of their chosen issue and calls for action. They will consider elements such as eye-catching visuals, concise messaging, relevant hashtags, and a compelling call to action.

This section encourages students to:

  • Utilize digital media platforms for advocacy and social change.
  • Apply their creativity and communication skills to effectively convey their message to a broader audience.
  • Reflect on the power of social media in raising awareness and mobilizing action on important societal issues.

Overall, this activity empowers students to critically analyze societal issues, collaborate with their peers, and take meaningful action to create positive change in their communities. By combining digital tools like Padlet with real-world platforms like Instagram, students are equipped to become active agents of change in the world around them.
