Elephants: Reading and Math

Combine reading and math in an animal study about elephants! This four-page activity involves reading a nonfiction passage about elephants and then answering questions. Students are prompted to go back to the text and highlight or underline where they found the answer (or a clue for the answer, in the case of an inference). Students answer questions about vocabulary that was presented in the passage, as well as fill in missing information on a graphic organizer.

On the third page, students learn more about the largest land mammals on Earth with a bar graph that compares the weights of elephants, white rhinos, hippos, and giraffes. They answer questions about the graph such as "Which mammals weigh more than 3,000 pounds?" They also solve problems that ask them to determine the difference in the weight of two mammals.

Finally, on the fourth page, students answer test-practice questions about synonyms, commas in a list, syllables, vowel sounds, and the past tense of verbs. These kinds of questions are commonly found on the Common Core and other state tests.
