Activity and Concept-Filled Drawing Sketchbooks Designed for the Elementary Art Room:

These ready-to-go books were designed to be used alongside lessons in my choice-based art room, but they are completely versatile for whatever art needs you may have! This sketchbook will be our guide for our drawing unit. Ways you may want to use this book:

  • Activities to coincide with lessons
  • Formative assessment tool
  • Independent practice for young artists
  • Drawing center print-outs
  • Ready to go sub plans
  • Pages to add to your current sketchbooks

Some pages are designed with K-2 in mind, some are designed for 3rd-5th. You will find those designations below but most pages can be used for any elementary level.

  • 1. Welcome letter for teacher from seller
  • 2. Sketchbook cover page - Space for student self-portrait
  • 3. All about the artist page
  • 4-5. Progress pages for upper elementary artists - Have students complete this page at the beginning of unit and at the end to monitor progress and growth. Can be used more than twice if needed.
  • 6-7. Progress pages for lower elementary artists - Same purpose as above.
  • 8. What do artists do? Art mediums tracing page.
  • 9. Where do artists get ideas? Examples and student inspiration sketches.
  • 10. I can make drawing marks - Students experiment with different drawing tools.
  • 11. I can make many kinds of lines - Examples and students experiment with different kinds of lines
  • 12. I can make shapes (2D) - Circle, square, triangle, trapezoid
  • 13. 2D shapes skill sketch - Students create a drawing using 2D shapes
  • 14. I can make 3D shapes - Could be used for upper elementary. Sphere, cube, pyramid, cone.
  • 15. 3D shapes skill sketch - Students create a drawing using 3D shapes
  • 16. Basic color wheel (ROYGBV) and warm and cool colors for lower elementary - Students fill in the color wheel with matching colors, same for warm and cool colors.
  • 17. Advanced color wheel - primary, secondary, tertiary colors - Students fill in the color wheel with matching colors
  • 18. Color skill sketch - Emotion color wheel - Students think about colors they personally associate with 4 emotions and fill it on their own wheel.
  • 19. Color mixing - Students mix the primary colors using drawing tools of your choice.
  • 20. Choice color mixing - Students choose their own colors to mix.
  • 21. Value practice - Students practice shading in caterpillars with different values of one color.
  • 22. I can show textures - Students practice drawing a variety of different textures.
  • 23. I can create faces - Students practice drawing different parts of the face in different styles of their choice or experimenting.
  • 24. Faces skill sketch - Students draw 3 different faces in picture frames.
  • 25. I can create many skin colors - Students practice coloring in with different skin tones and identify which looks most like them.
  • 26. I can create my skin color - Students trace their hand and color it with a color that looks just like them. They can personalize the hand with other details like nail color, skin markings, etc.
  • 27. I can create a background - lower elementary - Students imagine and draw their own background for a dancing dog.
  • 28. I can create a background - upper elementary - Students imagine and draw their own background for a moving person.
  • 29. I can draw what I see - Students have space for an observational drawing of their choice.
  • 30. I can draw my family or friends - Students make a portrait of people that are close to them.
  • 31 - 34. Variety of free sketch pages. 1 box, 2 boxes, picture frames, circular frames
