Description
Here is a novel study for Edgar Allan’s Official Crime Investigation Notebook by author Mary Amato. This is a wonderful book about friendship and perseverance. The students at Wordsworth Elementary School race to find out who has been stealing classroom items and leaving a poem in its place.

The comprehension skills that are covered in this novel study are predicting, visualization, cause and effect, sequencing, questioning, main idea, key details, theme, summarizing, character traits, opinion writing, point of view, character analysis, mood and tone. There are also a great deal of higher order thinking questions.
Seven posters are included in this packet. Four of them are the poems the thief left in the classroom. The other three posters are quotes from the book that are very pertinent to the story.
The novel study also includes an extensive differentiated vocabulary study. You can decide the level of difficulty that the students will do in their packets. Here are the choices:
1. The student can simple have a copy of the vocabulary and definitions to refer back to as they read.
2. The student can copy the vocabulary word and match it to its definition.
3. The student can copy the definition and match it to the vocabulary word.
4. The student can copy the vocabulary word and the definition.
This novel study is perfect for whole group, small group, book clubs, or individual study. It would also be a great tool to keep a student reading and writing all summer!
A RUBRIC is included for student expectations and easy grading. A key is included as well.
