I turned this in as my EdTPA lesson plan unit portion in 2015. I believe the requirements are different but it is a great 5 lesson unit plan that brings together ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. The standards included are for 2nd grade but can be used for 1st or 3rd with adjusted standards.

The central focus of the unit is language and literacy using a habitat study theme. The language and literacy focus of the unit is for students to gather, organize, and analyze data to answer a question and support a writing topic. I will teach the students this because of the standard, ‘Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question’. The activities in this unit will give the students many opportunities to learn and practice finding key details in text and language activities, using different organizers for their thoughts, and thinking critically about the data in order to write about a habitat topic. In order to create a purposeful, real experience the students will study living things in the area. The students will learn living things can cause change on Earth, humans can change things on Earth, people can change the environment both positively and negatively, and the students themselves can make a difference in the environment and influence the community.

The essential question for the entire unit is, “How can we help the living things in the environment where we live?” There are different questions for each learning experience that must be answered in order to move to the next learning experience.
