What educators are saying

We used parts of this with our eclipse studies. The students were engaged with the materials and enjoyed their learning.

Description

When an eclipse happens, it’s an attention-grabbing event! Practice finding the main topic of a text about solar and lunar eclipses. Identify and create text features to foster students’ interest in the movements of the earth, moon, and sun. Practice spelling cl, sp, and st words. And so much more in this eclipse learning unit for second grade.

This unit is flexible and I have not included a specific lesson plan for these resources. You can easily pick and choose what you would like to use to match your current learning goals.

This resource includes 43 UNIQUE pages with 200 TOTAL pages

One nonfiction text about what causes solar and lunar eclipses.

There are 16 vocabulary cards. Eight vocabulary words and eight definitions with photos. The words are eclipse, orbit, reflect, dim, lunar, solar, striking, and atmosphere. These words are used frequently throughout all the resources to make sure kids get lots of practice with them. There is also a vocabulary drawing paper. Students can also practice with the words circular and ovular in a sorting activity.

Also included in this resource are several crafts, hands-on activities, and opportunities for STEAM activities. This includes a move the moon paper where they can recreate a solar eclipse.

Text features are an important part of understanding nonfiction books. Practice finding the text features in the text about eclipses and reflecting on their usefulness. Also, work on photo captions by captioning additional photos.

Spelling eclipse can be a bit of a challenge but I’m sure your kids are up for it. With a mixture of hard and easy words, these spelling activities are fun while practicing the cl, sp, and st spelling patterns. The words included are: eclipse, cloud, climb, clue, clock, space, spin, speed, speak, spark, star, stay. There are sorting, word finish, and writing activities as well as a cute space alphabet for physically making the words. The eclipse poem includes the words and variations of the words for kids to find. There are also photos to help kids understand what the words mean. Also included is a practice paper for the word because. If your kids are anything like mine, they are frequently misspelling this commonly used word and need some additional practice.

Practice distinguishing between facts and opinions.

Compare and contrast solar and lunar eclipses.

Get your kids writing with two different writing prompts. There is an informative/explanatory writing prompt and papers with the teacher and student rubrics included. There is also a narrative writing paper that also has rubrics.

There is also a cute eclipse-themed main topic worksheet where students can write the main topic and key details.

Visualize the parts of speech with a Montessori method of sorting and labeling the parts of speech by color and shape. There are several activities including an easy adjective and adverb paper and a more complex one. There is a write your own sentence and direct the parts of speech worksheet. A Montessori parts of speech poster is included along with a parts of speech coloring paper. There are also Montessori parts of speech manipulatives included.

You will find six different exit ticket prompts to last you the whole week.

There is an eclipse maze with an additional writing prompt.

Use the large eclipse diagrams to make a solar and lunar eclipse.

Practice subtraction with regrouping in a simple math moon coloring paper.

Early finishers can benefit from an eclipse coloring paper and write about what it might be like to see an eclipse.
