What educators are saying

I used this activity as a way to review on the early release day before our spring break. It was perfect! The kids found it engaging and it kept them working for the entire class. Students who didn't finish even wanted to complete it over the break. Great activity!!
My students LOVE the math mystery packets and ask for more. I always love it when I can fit one into my schedule and let them do it. Such a great review!

Students must use math skills to eliminate hideouts and discover WHERE Slimewort hides!

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Converting Decimals to Fractions
  • Clue 2: Multiplying Integers
  • Clue 3: Least Common Multiple
  • Clue 4: Solve One-Step Equations (with fractions and decimals involved)
  • Clue 5: Calculating the Mean (Answers are either whole or decimals to the tenths)

Students must use critical thinking skills to determine which clues tell them to eliminate from the list of possible hideouts.

>> Pack includes a mystery declaration sheet, answer sheets, an elimination guide, an editable suspect list, and printable awards.

How long will this activity take?

The time to complete will vary anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, move on to the next clue within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom; learn more in the blog post link below:

Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.
Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2).
Solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations of the form 𝘹 + 𝘱 = 𝘲 and 𝘱𝘹 = 𝘲 for cases in which 𝘱, 𝘲 and 𝘹 are all nonnegative rational numbers.
