There are five clues to crack to solve the case:
- Clue 1: Reading and Writing Time (O'Clock, Half Past, Quarter Past, Quarter To)
- Clue 2: Fractions (Shaded Model Representations)
- Clue 3: Making 35 - Adding/Subtracting with fill in the number blanks
- Clue 4: Place Value - Ones, Tens, Hundreds
- Clue 5: Numbers Written in Words (two-digit numbers only)
EXTRAS
- A suspect declaration sheet
- Answer sheets and guide.
- Printable awards to give to students who solve the case.
- An Editable Suspects list has been added to the packet. This way, you can change the suspect names and alter the mystery outcome. Two alternative pre-made lists are also available. This is a great option if your students have already done this mystery story and you need to change the mystery answer.
How long will this activity take?
The completion time will vary between 30 minutes - and 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue, either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue."
