Launch student learning into Earth’s ancient history with this activity bundle. In this resource collection, student investigations begin four billion years ago with the formation of the Solar System and a planet that looks wildly unlike the place we live today. This storyline is designed to address topics like the formation of the Solar System, Earth, and Earth’s Moon, as well as Kepler’s Laws. (Note: The resources included in this bundle provide a starting point for learning, but they do not represent a complete storyline.)
This resource bundle works toward student mastery of the Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and/or Crosscutting Concepts in the tagged Performance Expectations.

How much class time will this take?
- These resources alone can likely be completed in up to two weeks.
- This bundle is designed to supplement other activities you are incorporating into your NGSS-aligned unit, though. Therefore, this time frame does not account for additional resources and activities you may incorporate into your unit storyline.
- Storyline length can always be adapted to fit your needs.
This activity works towards the following Disciplinary Core Ideas:
- ESS1.C The History of Planet Earth Although active geologic processes, such as plate tectonics and erosion, have destroyed or altered most of the early rock record on Earth, other objects in the solar system, such as lunar rocks, asteroids, and meteorites, have changed little over billions of years. Studying these objects can provide information about Earth’s formation and early history.
- PS1.C Nuclear Processes Spontaneous radioactive decays follow a characteristic exponential decay law. Nuclear lifetimes allow radiometric dating to be used to determine the ages of rocks and other materials.
- ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System Kepler’s laws describe common features of the motions of orbiting objects, including their elliptical paths around the sun. Orbits may change due to the gravitational effects from, or collisions with, other objects in the solar system.
