What educators are saying

This lab was set up very easy to follow. This was one of the first labs I completed with my 6th graders and they need only a little guidance from me. They were able to work in groups and follow the directions fairly well to complete the assignment and to show what they knew about faults.
Love love love, used this as a station when my students were reviewing faults and boundaries. Students did really well with it and enjoyed it a ton.

Description

Earthquake Activity - Types of Faults - Add a new, fun activity for introducing or reviewing types of faults in your earthquake unit. You will guide your students in creating, drawing, coloring, and labeling the foot wall and hanging wall, forces at work, name and direction of fault. All teacher directions and student handouts, with example work and pictures, provided. This earthquake activity takes about 45 minutes.

You will need modeling/crafting dough. I find that 3 regular sized containers is enough for 5 groups. I usually have 2 or 3 students in a group. Some mixing of colors in inevitable, but I find that my dough lasts for all my classes (3 uses with minimal mixing, and that's with 7th graders).

My students loved this activity! I used it the day after introducing faults and the types of forces that cause them.

Enjoy teaching again!
