Great idea working with taking care of the world and writing an opinion paper. Something important to write about.
Description
This resource will help your students write a persuasive or opinion text about conservation. It includes prewriting graphic organizers, sentence frames for writing a draft and fun writing paper for publishing. I have included links to websites that are appropriate for younger children to learn more about conservation. This simple writing project can easily be integrated into any Earth Day or recycling unit. Aligns with the first grade Treasures Unit 4, Week 2, June Robot Cleans Up.
Meets the following Common Core State Standards:
Text Types and Purposes:
W.K.1 Use a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book (e.g. My favorite book is….).
W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
Research to Build and Present Knowledge
W.K.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g. explore a number of books by a favorite author and express opinions about them).
W.1.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of “how-to” books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).
W.K.8 and W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Pages 1 - 5 Prewriting Planners
Students use a graphic organizer (five different versions included) to answer the following questions:
“Why should we take care of the Earth? “and “How can we take care of the Earth?”
“Why should we reduce, reuse or recycle? “ and “How can we can reduce, reuse or recycle?”
Pages 6-7 Sentence Frames (Can be used as a draft or for published writing).
Students complete the sentence stems with the information they have listed on the graphic organizer.
Pages 8-9: Poster Planning Pages
You may want student’s to create posters to persuade others to take care of the earth or to recycle. This is a great way to publish their persuasive writing. I have my students work with a partner to create their posters and then we hang them up all around our school.
Pages 10 – 15 Writing Paper to Publish Student’s Writing
Students can publish their draft writing on your choice of paper. Alternatively, these pages can be used for any type of writing with a conservation theme.
Page 16 Links to Online Resources
Use these kid-friendly online resources which include educational videos, music and games to help your students learn about conservation and recycling. They are a great supplement to classroom read alouds.
