Description

Do you struggle to come up with test scores that compare to WIDA scores for your ELLs? This resource includes Reading and Speaking rubrics that are based on a scale of 1 to 6, and it includes Reading and Listening score conversion charts that also range from 1 to 6! They make tracking data a breeze for ESL teachers!

Writing Rubrics:

I created these writing rubrics to help ESL students understand what they need to write great essays for WIDA!

I created them with simple, understandable terms for ESL students to be able to easily grasp.

I begin by going over these rubrics in great detail. We spend an entire class period going over them, discussing what they mean, adding notes, and highlighting key information.

Then, I do lessons over each concept. For example, we do an entire compound and complex sentence unit, so students know how to add them to their writing. I also do a lesson over the difference between a paragraph and an essay, I do mini lessons over transition words and text evidence stems too!

Then, I practice writing with students and show them how to add each of these concepts in. I model the writing for them.

Finally, I slowly wean them off of my help and have them to use only the writing rubrics to help them complete their writing!

I give students a score in each category and divide the final number by 5 (because there are 5 categories), and this is their “WIDA” score! For example, if a student gets a 4 in each category, that equals 20. 20 divided by 5 categories is 4. The student scored a 4.

If a student gets a 6 in each category, that equals 30. 30 divided by 5 categories equals 6—the highest score they can get!

Speaking Rubric

I created this Speaking Rubric for ESL students to be able to easily understand what they need in order to do well on WIDA!

I begin the scores at a 1 and go up in the details and sentences that should be included to get a higher score!

If I have students responding to 5 speaking questions, I will give them a score based on this rubric for each prompt and then average them. For example, if a student answers 5 question prompts and gets a 3, 4, 3, 2 and 2, their overall total is a 14. 14 divided by 5 prompts equals 2.8. The student gets a 2.8 in Speaking.

This is the best way I have found to easily match student scores closely to WIDA, but please feel free to use them in the way you see fit!

Reading & Listening Score Conversion Charts

I created these Reading test score charts to help teachers to assign a WIDA score for students.

Because the scores are only on a scale to 6, I found it difficult to convert test scores in the beginning. Once I created these charts, I finally felt like I was giving students data that closely resembled WIDA.

Some of the calculations may look odd, but I never give a student below a 1 unless they literally answer 0 questions correctly. The highest they can go is a 6, so I try to evenly divide scores based on a scale of 1 to 6.

I created a quick reference score chart for 5 question tests up to 30 question tests.

You can simply use this to keep up with student Reading scores and compare them to the student’s WIDA data.
