Unit I – Tell Me a StoryTime
- Develop study skills in the areas of vocabulary, writing process, research, time- management
- Develop reflective and creative thinking skills
- Develop an understanding of the elements of a story and of storytelling through the study of folk tales, myths, and legends from different cultures
- Use a variety of storytelling techniques, including visualizations, vocal expression and mime
- Develop independence and self-direction in the learning process
- Recognize and understand elements of language structure in the areas of simple sentence structure, adjectives and adverbs and common verb tenses
- Develop ability to communicate ideas both orally and in written form
Unit II– Survive and ThriveTime
· Build on and expand on study skills introduced in Unit I
· Students will study a short novel
· Develop ability to summarize, using appropriate vocabulary, researched material
· Use graphic organizers and visual tools to present new information
· Recognize specific suffixes, parts of speech and vocabulary surrounding emotions
· Acquire language skills in the areas of interviewing, problem-solving and terminology used in agreeing and disagreeing
· Begin to develop skills in independent learning and written and oral presentations
Unit III– Canada:How It WorksTime:25 hours
- Understand role of Canada’s three levels of government, the electoral system, political parties and regional economies
- Collect, read and gather information from newspapers, government publications, maps and telephone directories
- Develop understanding of democratic process, regional differences, available government services and how to access them
- Develop effective communication and skills through oral discussion and written communication
- Develop ability to locate specific information
- Understand basic vocabulary of government terms
Unit IV –Searching for AnswersTime
- Read and examine a variety of cross-curricular material related to some of the mysteries in our world today
- Develop reading strategy skills such as skimming, scanning and stating the main idea
- Use graphic organizers to develop note-taking and organizational skills
- Practice paragraph writing, use of past progressive tense
- Develop research skills
Unit V – Teen Culture Time: 25 hours
Purpose:
- Explore aspects of teen culture such as peer pressure, consumerism, violence prevention and strategies for conflict resolution
- Develop effective communication and skills through oral discussion and written communication
- Integrate language and skills introduced throughout the course
- Develop skills working a group to produce a magazine geared towards their age group
- Produce reports, reviews, interviews, letters and surveys for their group project
