During independent work time in reading or writing workshop, beginning English language learners need meaningful activities that they are able to work on successfully with minimal teacher support. The "Vocabulary Workbook for Newcomers" resources provide students with exposure to, and practice with, basic everyday vocabulary. Activities are designed so that beginning ELs are able to complete them independently! Incorporate the activities into small group instruction for additional support in building their English language skills.

The workbook bundle contains 6 units. Each unit contains six topics. That's 36 topics in all! Each topic has a reference poster and several practice pages. Students use the reference poster to independently complete the practice pages.

Simply print, staple and GO! Or, assign the Google Slides version via an online learning platform, such as Google Classroom!

Vocabulary Cards and Sorts

This is a companion resource to the vocabulary workbooks, and it's the perfect resource for building basic everyday vocabulary for beginning English language learners! This bundle contains more than 550 vocabulary cards, and more than 50 sorts! Use to "frontload" new vocabulary terms during guided reading, or to provide direct vocabulary instruction. Images and terms are on separate cards, allowing for a variety of uses, such as matching and memory games. A bonus file is included with suggested vocabulary card activities.

A literacy center is also a great place for students to continue building their language skills with either the sorts, the cards or the workbook activities.
