    Description

Do your students read a text based writing prompt but write an essay only vaguely related to it? Teach them to analyze writing prompts so that their state test essays will be on target with these two resources. The digital, interactive lesson for Google Slides ™ walks them through an acronym they'll apply to every prompt they see. The printable worksheets, which are also available digitally in Easel, will give them plenty of practice analyzing prompts. A teacher's guide will share tips I've learned over years of helping fifth graders improve their state writing test scores.

The lesson for Google Slides™ includes:

    • A lesson explaining each of the four letters of the PUTS acronym, which students will use to analyze writing prompts. (26 slides)
    • Interactive practice after each letter is explained. Students will read a prompt and click the correct answer. (8 slides - 2 for each letter)
    • Feedback slides that tell students if they correct or give them another chance if they missed it. (2 slides)
    • Four prompts for students to analyze at the end of the lesson so that you can assess their progress. They'll type their answers into text boxes. (4 slides with 4 key slides).

    The worksheet resource includes:

    • Six anchor charts that explain the acronym for analyzing writing prompts. Each 8 1/2" X 11" poster comes in both color and black-and-white versions.
    • A five-page teacher's guide that gives you insights I've gained over years of teaching fifth graders how to pick apart their prompts and watching their test scores go up as they (and I) got better at it.
    • Four multiple-choice worksheets
    • Three fill-in-the-blank worksheets
    • Answer keys for all the worksheets

Please note that the writing prompts in this resource are intended to teach students how to analyze prompts, not to give them actual essays to write. All the prompts are text-based, but the texts on which they are based are not included in this resource. If you need actual text-based writing prompts and real paired reading passages to go with them, you'll find a bunch in the Writing Test Prep Bundle, which includes this resource at a discount
