Description
Wondering how to best prepare your middle school ELA students for standardized testing? These three test prep review sessions will have students feeling ready and confident for standardized exams. Every year as state exam time approaches, I conduct three review sessions after school, and I use these THREE slide show presentations, games, and worksheets for the sessions. Review sessions help to build skill, strategy, motivation, and excitement for standardized testing. My students use these strategies, and I've seen growth and success every year!
Three review sessions, games, and practice packets are directly geared towards the New York State ELA exam in grades 6-8, but are adaptable to other standards based ELA exams. Everything is editable and digital links are provided!
Included in this bundle:
- Three beautiful, interactive Power Point or Google Slides Presentations (digital links are provided along with PowerPoint files)
- Three engaging, hands-on games
- Three practice activities
- Teacher directions
Includes three review sessions:
Review Session One: Literary Elements and Author's Purpose
Students examine questions they might encounter that ask literary elements and author's purpose questions. They play a literary elements and poetic elements matching game. Then, students complete a multiple choice practice in response to a poem.
Review Session Two: Close Reading, Inferencing, and Text Based Evidence
Students work to master the art of close reading, text based evidence, and making inferences. They examine questions that indicate inferencing and learn the "bullseye strategy" making sure the answers they choose are not just kind of right, but the BEST bullseye answer. Students play an inferencing game and complete a multiple choice practice that requires close reading and inferencing skills.
Review Session Three: Mastering the Short Answer and Extended Response
Session Three reviews tips for writing extended response essays and short answers/constructed responses (examples are modeled from the New York State 3-8 exams). Students learn strategies for short answer and extended response/essay writing. They play a quote sandwich game and complete a short response practice. Rubrics are included.
Give your students the tools they need to succeed! Build confidence. Build skill. Build motivation.
Good test takers are students who have the strategies to approach a test with confidence. With this practice and training under their belts, your students will be on their way to success on standardized exams!
