Purpose of Unit

MLK and the Civil Rights Movement is a time in history that my students found fascinating and this unit was always a favorite for them and for me. Because the students are highly engaged with the content, I found it a good time to integrate the difficult reading skill of summarizing and finding main ideas/details into it. To master these literacy skills takes multiple experiences and so the high interest in the subject encourages the students to do the work. This unit is a win-win situation for both the student and the teacher.

This unit will easily last over 2 weeks and the work has all been done for the teacher.

I have taught this unit with both 4th and 5th graders but the rigor of it could easily fit 6th and 7th graders also. Differentiating can easily be done with the teacher reading the passages to the students who struggle with reading or allowing students to work on the passages independently and with partners.

There are 6 different lessons that include:

• Enduring understandings

• Essential questions

• Tasks that can be used for formative assessments

• Summative task as the last lesson

• YouTube links to use as a motivation hook for each lesson.
