    Description

Save on preparation time with this war poetry bundle based on Wilfred Owen's Dulce et Decorum Est. This bundle includes the following three resources:

    What's in the powerpoint presentation?

The presentation runs for 4 to 5 minutes and integrates the key quotes from the poem, including the poetic terminology and analysis. As Owen's poetry carries an anti-war sentiment, I've titled the analysis "Inglorious" because according to Owen it is not sweet and fitting to die for one's country as the Latin title of the poem suggests.

    What's in the analysis handout?

The analysis includes the following information:

    • Context: historical/WW1, author as soldier / poet, first person narrator, reader address
    • Image devices - imagery, emotive language, simile, hyperbole, metaphor, personal language.
    • Sound devices: exclamation, rhyme scheme, onomatopoeia, alliteration, repetition.

    What's in the worksheet?

Great for a relief lesson or to support a study of war poetry, the worksheet questions increase in complexity and work through the poem chronologically to help students under the layers of meaning in the poem. The worksheet includes:

    • Wilfred Owen's poem in full with space for student annotation
    • Author and historical context as a WW1 soldier and poet
    • 14 poetry analysis questions about the key parts of the poem
    • Answer key with explanations.
    • A 10 question multiple choice review assessment on Easel that builds on detail in the worksheet.

The three resources model poetry analysis and evaluation leading to an oral presentation for assessment. This bundle is specifically targeted at students exploring war poetry in Senior English.
