Included in this bundle:

  • 1 Google Slides Dual Court System Presentation that covers the Federal and Florida court systems. The presentation includes stop and think questions that will challenge your students to think about why we have two court systems in the US (federal and state), which courts handle the most cases, and who handles cases using a few scenario examples (determining original and appellate jurisdiction). It's great as a self paced note taking module and perfect for students who were absent or distance learning and want to catch up on what they missed.
  • 1 Google Slides Court Scenarios Drag and Drop assignment that will challenge students to place each of the three scenarios into the right court system, determine which court has original jurisdiction, and where they can go for appeals. Great for reinforcing what students have just learned.

This product is designed specifically for the Florida court system. The scenarios and presentation may be used for any state court system but the matching icons are Florida specific.

This presentation goes over Federal Court, State Court (Florida specific but can be used in other states with few adjustments), Original and Appellate Jurisdiction.

The scenarios will have students determining:

  1. Which court system would handle the case: Federal of State?
  2. Once they determine the correct system, students must identify which level of court will have original jurisdiction.
  3. Once they determine original jurisdiction, students must then identify where they will go to appeal the decision.
  4. If possible, students must determine which court would hear the next appeal.

I like to allow students to work on their scenarios individually first and drag and drop their best guess using their notes. Then, let them compare screens with a partner or shoulder buddy to see if there are any discrepancies. When everyone completes their assignment, review on the big board and call students up to drag and drop (or ask where the icons should be placed) and have them check to see if they got it right.

I find that students retain information at a much higher rate when they get to experience or participate in something first hand, have fun working together or discussing the lesson, and get to stand up and show what they know to their classmates. I hope this activity bundle helps your students retain important standards based information so that they can succeed on their assessments.

This product is included at a reduced rate in the Dual Court Activity Bundle product found here.
