Description

This is the complete Dream House Project used in my Accelerated Honors Geometry Course. It can be modified to work for any level class. This file includes Parts A, B, C, and D as well as all the scoring rubrics.

Part A: In this part of the project, students will create a scale drawing of the house floor plan as well as exterior views.

Part B: In this second part, students will calculate the construction costs of building the house they designed in part one. They will use Microsoft Excel to create a spreadsheet of all construction costs, material costs, appliances, etc. This involves calculating perimeter, area, surface, area, and volume. Additionally students will conduct an energy audit of their hypothetical house, determining an approximate budget of living expenses such as a gas bill, oil bill, etc. This portion of the project is designed to take about 6 weeks.

Part C: In this third portion, students will create and present a sales pitch to the teacher and classmates. Their goal is to convince the students (who may pretend to be a board of prospective contractors) why they should decide to buy the plans and build this house. Students may use Power Point, Prezi, or other visual aides to give their sales presentation. In my experience, the students have really enjoyed this part of the project because they are given the opportunity to show off all of their hard work.

Part D: This fourth part is a short reflection piece for students to provide feedback on the project and their group.
