Description

This project is ALWAYS a hit so we do it every year in high school drama class as a project for our VOICE unit of study.

First we study the Elements of Voice, and they apply these for this project.

It's a two-day project (sometimes it takes three) where they write a script based around a telephone conversation between two people.

✤ They pick a scenario out of a hat. These are included - two pages where you can cut them easily into slips.

✤They have one day to write a script, which will be performed either individually or in partners.

Example "You're talking to the police, trying to convince them of your innocence with that incident" - they take this prompt and write a script based off of this, where they have to use vocal elements to tell the story

TIPS:

  • I also give them the option to present in front of the curtains, or behind (seen or hidden) - either way it doesn't matter because they're marked on their use of voice. Behind the curtains is a cool option because it takes away ALL body language - a great challenge!!
  • Staging can be simple or creative! Two desks and two phones (either real or fake)
  • You can have students work individually by having them CHANGE their voices to create two characters
  • You could make it a requirement that they must have at least two sound effects - this can add another element of voice!

NOTE - Some of the prompts included may have to be edited out if you're working with a younger group. Some are meant for more mature audiences / actors.

I also included a MW document of a really basic VOICE rubric - that you can easily tweak to fit your assessment needs. [there's 3 mini rubrics on 1 page to make group evaluations way easier]

I also included a really simple evaluation rubric there students look at:

-peer evaluation

-self evaluation ("what I need to work on" box)

-teacher evaluation...so they get 3 forms of feedback from one rubric. I use this as assessment for learning, not of learning - so the marks don't count, it's just for feedback! I hope it helps.
