This readers' theater literacy toolkit makes a fun addition to any unit involving dragons. It includes the following:

>"How to Teach an Old Dragon New Tricks": 4-page script for 5-7 readers

>Sound Effects: Cue Cards for audience participation

>Vocabulary: Word Work activity

>Comprehension Check: Inference graphic organizer activity

>An overview of readers' theater & the four elements of fluent reading

The script includes a list of “Watch-out Words!” This feature highlights challenging words for which students may need help as they practice. These words also make terrific candidates for classroom vocabulary instruction.

If you choose to do script-based vocabulary instruction, the Word Work vocabulary activity included with the script uses four of the “Watch-out Words!” for more in-depth vocabulary study. A Sample Answer Key provides a basic, kid-friendly explanation of each word’s meaning, which can be used when actively teaching students the words.

For a fun, interactive readers-theater performance, students can use the Cue Cards to have the audience join in creating the sound effects during the story.

If you want to strengthen students' inference skills, you can use the Comprehension Check: Inference graphic organizer activity as another extension of the script. A Sample Answer Key is included.

A basic overview of readers' theater is also provided, including information on the four essential components of reading fluency—accuracy, rate, phrasing, and expression.
