    Making Sense with Dominoes

    Description

Dominoes are easily my favorite math manipulative. I especially love introducing and teaching addition with dominoes. Not only is it a very concrete method that is easy for students to grasp, but it helps them practice their subitizing skills as well.

    BASIC ADDITION

    This download includes 9 domino addition sheets with growing difficulty level (+1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +6, +7, +8, +9).

Students are challenged to fill in the "number bond" (or "part-part-whole") to match the domino. Next they need to fill out an addition sentence to match both the domino and the number bond.

    ADD IT UP: MISSING ADDENDS

Introduce your students to basic addition with missing addends while building number sense.

Fun and easy to understand Print and Go math center or whole group activity.

Students fill in the missing dots, or "count on" to find the missing addend in simple addition sentences

    Includes 7 sheets:

    Mixed addition with sums 1-5

    Mixed addition with sums 1-6

Mixed addition with all sums equaling 5

    Mixed addition with sums 5-10

Mixed addition with all sums equaling 10

Two Half sheets for homework or "exit tickets"

    COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY OF ADDITION DOMINOES

    17 pages

-Students can solidify their understanding of the commutative property of addition with this fun and interactive math center.

    PART-PART-WHOLE/NUMBER BOND DOMINOES

4 pages (2 with blank dominoes, 2 with completed dominoes)

-This product was designed as part of

    my introduction to number bonds/ part-part- whole./

It can be used as guided instruction, whole class work,

    or as a math center.

Includes dominoes with dots and without dots

    BUILDING NUMBER SENSE WITH DOMINOES

1 individual student sheet (front and back) 13 sorting sheets

-Great small group activity for building number sense and

helping students understand the commutative property of

    addition.

    Target Standard:

    CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.B.3
    Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.2 Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)

    CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.5

Fluently add and subtract within 5.

    CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
Fluently add and subtract within 5.
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
    Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
