Description
The world of competitive dog shows is getting a serious dose of swagg in this 21st Century Math Project. Tired of the traditional mumbo jumbo, organizers of the People’s Choice Dog Show set out to do something different. In traditional dog shows, the dogs and their handlers run in a circle. A single judge picks whichever dogs they think are the best. The People’s Choice organizers are flipping this on their head by bring advanced metrics and hashtags into the game. They have organized dogs by weight classes, set up an obstacle course and have crafted an algorithm that they believe will pick the true, undisputed best dog on earth based on ideal measures.
In this 18 page PDF, you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, 3 different assignments for students to use, and an answer key. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. -- In “People’s Choice Dog Show – Qualifying Round” students will use an algorithm to determine the 6 dogs that earn the lowest scores. They will be moving on to the next round.
-- In “Best in Show” students use a tweaked algorithm with more decimals to determine the Top Dog of each weight class. Students can work in pairs and will need two dice per pair. Students will roll the dice to determine the scores for Agility and Swagg.
-- In “People’s Choice Dog Show – New Algorithm” students will develop their own algorithm with different weights and ideal measurements. Students will then test their algorithm with the data from the first assignment so they can compare the results and the impact of changing certain items.
