Division Word Problem Depth and Complexity Frame

Although this Depth and Complexity frame is designed for GATE students, it can also be used with non GATE students. I have used it many times with students all across the board, and they like the challenge. Students are asked to solve a real world word problem. I use this as a CGI problem in which I don't help the students solve the problem; however, I do let them analyze the problem in groups and then with partners. First, we read the problem several times, and then I call on students to "tell the story." Next, in groups, students use a Round Robin (each group member getting a chance to share), to share the important details within the problem. Then, they work with a partner using a Rally Robin (taking turns back and forth) to write down key math terms in the problem or words a mathematician would use to solve the problem. Finally, students work alone to solve the problem as many ways as they can and answer a question having to do with the remainder.

After the students have solved, I walk around and look for students to come up to the board and show how they solved.

+2 Fill-in-the-blank frames--this allows you to change the names and the problem values, so you can use it again and again!
+ Alternative pages--Show your work 3 or 4 ways and explain your answer! (These different pages can be used as a back side to the frame or can even be used instead of the frame.)
+Different format of the frame which uses rectangles instead. This may be easier for your students to write and solve inside.
