What makes sweetgrass a sacred medicine? According to Tribal Trade, “Sweetgrass is believed to be the first plant to grow on earth; it is said to be the hair of Mother Earth.” It also represents strength and resilience in both family, community, and their connection with Mother Earth.”

Author’s note: My mother was not of indigenous origins (Native American origins); however, she taught me a deep love of the Earth and Nature. One summer she gathered sweetgrass near our home in northern Maine and made sweetgrass braids for us to keep close and cherish. The fragrance of sweetgrass is heavenly!
