Description

The ready-to-use Mandarin and Bilingual (English/Chinese) conversation cards can be used in a variety of small group discussion and cooperative learning structures (like Talking Chips, Inside Outside Circle, so forth). Reading response, student discussions, PLCs, literature circles, and more! Help elevate the "social" into social emotional learning!

Student conversation is structured so

  • all students participate
  • everyone has choice and options for how they will contribute, and
  • they are guided with accountable talk sentence stems. (Plus, it's fun! )

You can print out the black & white cards, or give each person in the group their own color set of cards!

The discussion cards come in three language versions: Mandarin only, Mandarin + English, and English + Mandarin.

This is set #1, with general phrases/ visible thinking routine prompts!

The Conversation cards in this set are layered with Visible Thinking Routines (i.e. See, Think, Wonder, What makes you say that?) & Accountable Talk sentence stems!

Cooperative Structure Description: "Each student receives one “talking card.”  It is preferable if each student has a unique color for his/her cards. The students are given an open-ended discussion or reflection topic, or a content area prompt.

In order to speak, a teammate must place their card in the center of the team table (or in the digital jar!). Teammates cannot interrupt and must practice respectful listening. When they are finished, another student places their chip in the center and is free to add to the discussion.

When a student uses up all of their “talking cards”, they don't speak until all teammates have added to the discussion and placed their chips in the center of the table. When everyone has had a chance to speak, each student collects their cards and continues with the discussion, using “talking cards” or start again with a new topic.

*I've found it best to give the 'big talkers' a few more cards and/or give some students cards with questions to read vs being 'on the spot' with answers.
