My students love to draw, so we use step-by-step directed drawing activities as a vehicle to inspire our writing! Just choose the topic, and then choose between 10 differentiated writing templates so students have a "just right" writing job.
Step by step drawing promotes success, and this feeling of pride makes even my reluctant writers excited to write about the little animals they have created!
The writing templates are carefully designed with format that supports emergent writers. There are also differentiated writing templates to challenge more advanced writers (or the same students later in the school year).

**Please note the layout and format of the drawing pages have been updated, so may look slightly different than the preview. There are at least 10 differentiated writing templates for every directed drawing topic! (20 topics in all)
This small bundle contains five different animals included in each of the 4 sets bundled here, so 20 lessons altogether (each with their own differentiated writing prompts).
Each of the 20 animals includes:
*A full color poster of the finished drawing for display or to project while students draw and write.
*A poster with step-by-step directions to complete a cute drawing. These can also be laminated for an instant directed drawing center!
*A directed drawing guide with an empty frame to draw in and cut off to keep the drawing.
*A comic-style writing template to focus on dialogue.
*A sentence writing template with self-editing checkboxes
*A supported creative writing template for simple sentences about the animal.
*A supported frame for creating a simple story about the animal.
*A blank writing template for early writers (room for 3 or 4 sentences)
*A blank writing template for advanced writers (room for 10-12 sentences) and also perfect for writing poems!
These are perfect for NO PREP whole class directed drawing, small groups, independent literacy centres, sub tubs or even a fun way to do home writing practice with the family! During reporting conferences, I sent home a package of these writing prompts with students who needed to work on their writing and parents were happy to support writing at home with these cute sets!
Teachers might just enjoy drawing along with the class! :-)
