Digital and Print Practice Challenges & Logs

This fun collection of digital & print practice record & challenge sheets will help keep your students excited and motivated about practicing at home while they are away from school. We all worry about how much practice time students will lose during a long break. These challenges will help keep them motivated!

*The digital version is designed for teachers using Google Classroom.

Note: All but the "TUNING TIME" challenge would work for ANY music program. While the tuning challenge was designed for band, it could be suitable for other instrumental music classes as well. A tuner is needed!

Included Challenges:

1. The Practice Pyramid- Students pick a challenging measure(s) to isolate. After playing the measure with no mistakes, they color in circles on the practice pyramid. As the pyramid gets bigger, the challenge becomes more difficult.
2. Performance Self-Evaluation- For this project, students will recruit a family member to record video of them playing a piece of music or an exercise once a day for seven days in a row. Then, students will watch the recording and fill out an evaluation for each performance. At the end of the week, Students fill out an end-of-week reflection.
3. Metronome Measures- This challenge focuses on isolating few measures at a time and practicing SLOWLY with the metronome.
4. Build a Flower- While this challenge works for any age, younger students will especially like this one since it involves coloring, cutting and gluing (oh, and PRACTICING!) A fun idea would be to recruit some younger siblings for the craft portion.
5. Tuning Time- This challenge focuses on practicing with a tuner and working on playing the notes in a concert B flat scale in tune with a beautiful sound. Students record their progress on the worksheet. Note: This challenge is geared for instrumental music students. This challenge
6. Practice Time- This challenge is simple. For every time a student practices 30 minutes, they color one clock. There are 30 clocks total, so the goal is to practice every day of the month!
7. Top 10 Challenge- Students will make a list of 20 music excepts that they are having trouble with and will write down the specific measures they are practicing from each excerpt. They will record the number of minutes practice on each excerpt under the corresponding day of the week.
8. Tiny Tasks (this challenge may be EDITED)- Small things you do really do add up to make a HUGE difference in a student's playing! When students find themselves with 10-30 spare minutes, they will complete one of the tiny tasks on the challenge. Once they complete a task, they check it off the list. Examples are: practice in front of the mirror for 5 minutes and check your embouchure, finger through a B flat scale three times during your favorite movie, etc. Note: This challenge may be edited to fit your music program's needs.

• Practice Records- use once a month or so to take a break from the usual practice record routine.
• Do you do Band Superbowl or March Music Madness? Use the football or basketball themes for a fun practice card during those seasons!
• Scavenger hunt- edit the cards in a way that the students can complete a scavenger hunt around the band room!
• Use the blank templates to have students fill out their own practice goals during the breaks!
