What educators are saying

I always like to complete a reading interest survey with my students at the beginning of the year. I felt this resource covered a lot of topics and I loved how it was a GoogleForm. Made it so much easier to organize the data!

Description

  • Starting a new class or new school year as a middle school English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, reading teacher, or writing teacher?
  • Looking for some back to school activities to help you get to know your new students?

If so, this is a must-have resource for you to put in your first days of class lesson plans!

This digital student interest survey is a great way to get to know your students personally but also get to know what they think about reading and writing. Basically, this “survey” is a pre-assessment in disguise! ;)

I used this survey at the beginning of the year every year. Once I had my student data, I would teach an “Intro to ELA” mini-unit where I taught topics like genres and types of writing. It would mostly be a review, but I wanted my students to start thinking about themselves as real-world readers and writers. This interest survey was a great starting point for that exploration and for a year of learning!

This resource is a PDF with a link to making your own copy of the Google Form. Once you create your own copy, it can be easily assigned in Google Classroom, and your students’ responses can then live in your Google Drive all school year for referencing purposes. You can also edit the form however you want for your specific needs.

**Talbert’s Curriculum Corner Idea: Copy & edit this survey to use it again at the end of the school year to see how your students’ thoughts evolved over the 180-days that they had you as their reading and writing teacher!

This digital student interest survey can be assigned in a couple different ways:

  • In-Class Assignment
    • Assign it the second or third day of class and provide at least 30 minutes for completion.
    • You may also want to split it in half (reading section one day, writing section another day).
    • Encourage your students to take their time and consider their answers.
  • Homework Assignment
    • Assign it for homework on the first or second day and provide at least two or three nights for the students to complete it.
    • Encourage your students to take their time and consider their answers.
  • BOTH In-Class & Homework Assignment
    • Go over the questions in class and clarify any confusion about what is being asked.
    • Provide a couple days of homework time followed by a class work session (for students who didn’t complete it at home).
    • This will show your students that you value their reflection and thoughtfulness.

This resource includes:

  • 3-section Google Form survey
    • Section 1– Name, class period, general interests (4 questions)
    • Section 2– Writing interest survey (9 questions)
    • Section 3– Reading interest survey (11 questions)

**All sections must be completed before the survey can be submitted. The work-around is to break the survey into two separate surveys. You may want to do this for students with disabilities as an accommodation.**
