Be the teacher-as-facilitator you aim to be and provide a platform for your students to freely explore, within boundaries, this Web Quest Búsqueda to introduce novice learners to the magic of LOS REYES MAGOS. Una Búsqueda de LOS REYES MAGOS provides the foundation students need to become begin appreciating cultures by exploring perspectives, practices and products.  This resource is appropriate for Classroom or Distance Learning settings and can be used as is for the following classes:

THE PERSPECTIVE: We firmly believe that all teachers are Advanced Placement teachers. As such, we must provide at each proficiency level the exposure and support needed for students to be successful in their language journey. We scaffold the Cultural Comparison AP requirement by discussing perspectives, practices and products as we discuss culture.  It is a joy that former novice students have this understanding and confidence when they come to our AP Spanish Language and Culture class.

THE PRACTICE: Students will follow their quest to learn about LOS REYES MAGOS via their own set of slides they personalize by reading the introduction, watching authentic videos and completing listening and writing tasks.  The end product can be easily differentiated and tailored to the individual student’s needs.

THE PRODUCT: Students are provided slides and instructed to read, listen, record, pre-write, write, evaluate and reflect their understanding as they follow these sections:

•   a clearly written content and language objective in Spanish and English

•   flash cards with 6 essential vocabulary terms, a visual and the translation

•   an “Urgent Vocabulary” slide to be completed as a whole class, in partners or individually as student work through their Web Quest

•   an introduction to the LOS REYES MAGOS tradition and/or practices

•   clearly written and visual instructions for students to complete the Web Quest

•   2 authentic photos of a family leaving LOS ZAPATOS to be found by LOS REYES MAGOS

•   3 authentic video links of newscasts and a commercial for LOS REYES MAGOS

•   a listening activity to complete while listening for cognates in an authentic video

•   a link to research la Rosca de Reyes and Día de la Candelaria extension traditions with a Writing component

•   a visual explaining the comparing of cultural traditions by focusing on perspectives, practices and products

•   a Double Bubble example for comparing and contrasting cultures

•   a blank Double Bubble for the students to personalize their comparing and contrasting task

•   a Writing Task for the student to compare LOS REYES MAGOS and a familiar tradition

•   an Extension Activity posing a cultural and environmental dilemma and how different entities benefit (the post office) and suffer (the balloon vendors)

•   an Evaluation of the student’s own engagement in this activity and a suggestion for improvement

•   a Landing Slide to insert screen capture evidence of the completed work.  The student is asked to reflect on their best effort by dragging and dropping a gold star.

•   a Task Completion Rubric in Spanish and English with a link to an optional Jamboard™ for peer review.

•   answer keys required for 3 of the tasks
