What educators are saying

My students loved this unit and activity! They enjoyed creating their own poems and performing in front of their peers.
Poetry is admittedly one of my weaker areas to teach, so this was a welcome resource. Secondary Sara produces some great resources and this is one of them.

Description

Writing and sharing poetry can be intimidating – take the fear out of the presentation. Turn your classroom into a multimedia, high-energy performance space with a DIGITAL poetry slam!

The digital poetry slam is a great jumping-off point if you're unsure how to assess poetry, want to bring in more technology, or want to give students options to avoid performance anxiety. This project can occur any time of the year, whether you’re celebrating National Poetry Month in April, Black History Month in February, or purposely want to do a poetry project OUTSIDE of those months!

First, students learn the basics of slam with the “Intro to Slam Poetry” lesson, and then create their own poems, either immediately or using a specific activity or expectation that you add.

Then students choose to either present their poems live, or RECORD their poem (either audio or video), which they can play to their peers during the in-class poetry slam. Peers give written or purely vocal feedback with snaps and cheers (and YOU get to grade as they present – take no work home!)

This 10-page download includes:

• A 4-page Teacher’s Guide with tips to implement the Slam, information for unit and lesson plans, and a standards guide to modify this project for grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12!

• A multimedia, close reading “Intro to Slam Poetry” lesson with audio and video clips to get started

• The Project: An instruction sheet for students and a CCSS-aligned rubric for narrative writing, technology use, and speaking standards; includes a self-assessment

• A 1-page, unofficial User’s Guide for screencastomatic.com, my favorite FREE video tool!

NOW INCLUDES Google Docs, Word, and PDF versions!

NOTE: This product is INCLUDED in my Public Speaking Activity Bundle AND in my Poetry Activity Bundle. Check them out to save!
