What educators are saying

My student and I really enjoyed this lesson on the digestive system. It was just what we needed to add to our curriculum and was engaging and informative.
My students loved this hands on lab on how our bodies digest food. We broke it up into 2-3 days and it was a very successful way to a learn the concept of food digestion

Description

How long is the human gastrointestinal tract? What role does each organ fulfill in digestion? Send your high-school Anatomy, Health, or Biology students into a hands-on, gut-mimicking activity on the human digestive system. Haven't done any teaching on the digestive system yet? No worries! This lab can be used with very little prior instruction. I've included my notes that I teach before the lab in this resource so that you can be certain your students are ready for the content.

This lab is broken into two meaningful parts.

Part 1: Students will figure out how long their own digestive system is and create a replica with different colors of yarn. They'll also learn how long food is in each part of the digestive system. Once they finish their model of the digestive system, they will answer analysis questions.

Part 2: In the second part of the lab, students will "digest" a bag of cereal as they learn what each organ in the gastrointestinal tract does to food. Each time they learn a new organ, they will do something to the bag of food, turning it into "chyme" and eventually into "solid waste."

Supplies required for Part 1: red yarn, yellow yarn, green yarn, blue yarn, purple yarn, scissors, masking tape (Dollar Tree has yarn!)

Supplies required for Part 2: 2 plastic sandwich bags per group, box of cereal, lemon juice or vinegar, food coloring (yellow & green), enough paper towel rolls for each group to have one, enough sponges for each group to have one, scissors, permanent markers

This resource is available in both print and digital forms. Included within this resource you will receive:

  • 7-page student lab packet
  • 7-page digital student lab packet (through Google Slides™ with textboxes)
  • Key to the lab packet
