What educators are saying

This is a staple of my digestion unit where I cover physical and chemical changes. Students love the creative opportunity and I love seeing their creations!
I had done a similar assignment with my elementary students YEARS ago (pre-Chromebook/computer days) and wanted to introduce something similar for my high school students. This was an excellent jumping-off point for me. I made minor modifications to suit my students' needs.

Digestion Story Writing Activity with Rubric

**10/14/15 - Writing paper added to file and activity was given a facelift. Please download the file again for the updates!

This is one of the most popular writing assignments in my class! When we study the human body in science, students complete this writing project. (I do the writing during language arts, but it could be done in science as well.) Students select one of their favorite foods as the character. They then take the food through the digestion system. GROSS!! That is the reaction I get from many students at first, but in upper elementary gross = cool. This assignment really gets students to think about the digestion system. After a while, someone will always ask, "Well, what do I write about the end?" I just let them think about it for a while;) If you are looking to help motivate your students to write, this assignment is for you.
This assignments includes:
- students instructions
- brainstorming and prewriting sections
- rubric

I developed the rubric so there is a science section as well as a writing section. I take a grade for each subject from the story. (For science, students are required to include all steps of the digestive process and explain each section in the story.)

Some students will walk the food straight through the process in a no-nonsense manner, but other students get very creative. I have had students write the story as if the food were on a ride. It is amazing how creative some of them become!

The length this lesson takes will depend upon how long your students take to write the story, as well as if you are having them do a draft or a final copy.

Students should be studying or have already studied the digestive system when they complete this activity.

If you use this lesson in your class, please let me know how it goes:D
