Dictionary Skills and Context Clues 20 Task Cards staar prep tek 6.2E

Students often struggle with identifying which dictionary definition is being used within the context of a sentence. This concept is seen on state testing, such as STAAR tests, and is a concept that can be tedious to teach.

Instructions:

1. Students receive a task card with a sentence written on the top and an underlined word.
2. The task card provides students with a mock dictionary entry for the word, with 2-3 possible definitions for the underlined word.
3. Students must decide which dictionary definition to use, based on the context clues provided in the sentence. They record their answer on their student recording sheet.

There are so many ways to use task cards!

• Practice this skill by posting 1 task card a day for a warm-up or exit ticket
• Allow students to work quietly in partners/small groups to complete a set number of cards
• Tape task cards around the room for a fun 'scavenger hunt'
• Use in your room as a "dictionary practice center"
• Assign to 'fast finishers' for extra practice
• Assign for extra credit work
• Emergency sub plans
