What educators are saying

Loved, Loved, Loved this resource. Very engaging and even the teachers who came with their class to the library wanted to give it a try!
This resource has been helpful! It is engaging and has great tasks to help students discover their school library.

Description

Great back to school activity for your library! Need a fun way to teach your students how to use the Dewey Decimal System in your library? These task cards are the answer! Locating resources in your library or media center can be difficult for students, even with great signage! Understanding the Dewey Decimal System and the way in which it is structured will help students quickly find what they need . In order to adequately develop these skills, students need a great deal of practice using tools such as these task cards.

TO USE: Students will read the scenario on each task card, and will record the correct Dewey category in which that resource can be located. I have provided a Dewey classifications poster as an option for students to use while completing the task cards.

Included:

- 24 task cards

- 1 student recording sheet

- 2 answer keys

- 1 Dewey Decimal System Classifications poster

NOTE: I have included 2 answer keys. The first provides the correct 100s Dewey category, and the second provides the more specific 10s Dewey category. Use these to differentiate for your students.

These task cards can be used in many ways to develop problem solving skills as well as information skills. You can begin by simply displaying the file on your interactive whiteboard and discussing a few cards, solving together as a whole group. Once students become adept at this, I use the task cards to play Scoot. I also have task cards as one of my centers every week. For paperless classrooms, these task cards can easily be used in a digital setting. Share the PDF with your students in Google Classroom, Dropbox, SeeSaw, ClassKick, AirDrop, and more. Create a quick Google form for students to submit answers to you.
