Developing Research Skills Task Cards An IB PYP Activity with Distance Learning

*UPDATED TO INCLUDE DIGITAL VERSION*These 36 task cards, now with digital versions and 18 additional digital slides, are a terrific way to actively practise the IB PYP Approaches to Learning skills needed for research and that we use continuously throughout inquiry based teaching. Covering data analysis, questioning, inferring, synthesising and much more, the task cards can be used in a variety of ways that encourage the children to reflect and think about the strategies for researching, with various scenarios and data that are easily relatable to them. As you help the children with these research skills in a safe, familiar environment, it will greatly benefit them throughout school and particularly as they approach the IB PYP Exhibition. A great review activity! Differentiated for 3rd-5th grade. The grey cards are more challenging text. UK and USA spelling.

Suggestions:

•Whole class - sitting in circle, each child will have a card to read aloud and then share their opinion. These can be discussed as you go around the circle. Some of the picture cards could be shown on a document camera or overhead projector.

•Small groups- Place a pile of cards face down in the middle of the group. Each person will take a turn to read a card, act out, complete or offer their opinion and then those can be discussed within the group.

•Teacher led - working with a small group, you could select a few specific cards that target skills you are hoping to reinforce.

•Independent work - Each child can work with a few cards and write or draw how they would solve the research problems presented on the task cards.

•Digital version: Use as collaborative group tasks or independent thinking activities.

The digital version also includes graphic organisers for recording thinking for collaborative sets of task cards as well as 18 differentiated individual slides which can be used for small group or whole class learning and reflecting.
