I do EVERYTHING for your Main Idea lesson in this Power Point. I include your printables and answer keys that I used in class.

I created this Main Idea Power Point to help me teach my students how to locate KEY supporting details. Once they are able to do this, then I have them analyze the key details to come up with a main idea leading them to summarize the reading passage. I have always taught main idea backwards (starting with the key details) and have had great success with this strategy.

I broke this Power Point up into (5) days. In this PPT you receive 86 slides that you can use with your students. I included a slide for the following:

Day 1 - I can determine key supporting details within an informational text.

I Do, We Do, You Do slides showing students how to analyze a passage and highlight key details.

Day 2 - I can determine the main idea of an informational text by using key supporting details.

I Do, We Do, You Do, using the highlighted key details from the day before and creating a main idea to go with those same passages.

Day 3 - I can use a graphic organizer, along with key details, to help me determine the main idea.

I Do, We Do, You Do, with (2) new passages showing students how to locate key details and a main idea using a graphic organizer.

Day 4 - I can summarize the text by determining the main idea of a text, recount key details, and explain how they support the main idea.

I Do, We Do, You Do, using the same strategies listed above to help locate the summary using a graphic organizer.

Day 5 - I can assess my understanding of determining the main idea of a text by recounting key details while summarizing the text.

You Do using the summative assessment in my resource packet or one of your own.

Included in this packet is a short formative assessment where you can track the student's growth on this objective. I do this daily after I teach my lesson. This helps me to quickly see who needs a quick reteach. If you are not currently tracking data, check out these binder pages I created to help you track your students in their comprehension. I have seen tremendous growth since tracking EVERYTHING my students do - including keeping track of these formative assessments before giving a summative assessment.
