What educators are saying

This was one of my favorite activities. My students and I love code-cracking. This was both challenging and engaging. I used it as a way to assess my students in their knowledge of determinants.

Description

Students will be able to find the determinant of 2x2 and 3x3 matrices. They will also have to use their critical thinking skills to find an element given the determinant. Once they finish, students will use the numbers to follow directions on how to "crack the code!"

A Google Form is also included for students to check their code. For an interactive Google Slides preview, click here!

Understand that the zero and identity matrices play a role in matrix addition and multiplication similar to the role of 0 and 1 in the real numbers. The determinant of a square matrix is nonzero if and only if the matrix has a multiplicative inverse.
Work with 2 × 2 matrices as transformations of the plane, and interpret the absolute value of the determinant in terms of area.
