What educators are saying

Our grade level made these to celebrate the Ho Chunk nation on First Nation's Day. The students loved to create their own totem poles!
My class had a great time learning about totem poles and designing their own during Native American Heritage Month. Thank you!

Description

Great project for students to create after a unit on Native American history/ Northwest Coast First Nations Art and Culture. Easy to create 3/D paper tube Welcome Totems. Students will enjoy creating their very own Welcome Totem, or they can cut and glue the images I designed onto their own art. Several options for teachers to accommodate students of all abilities. 10 Northwestern animal images are included for inspiration. Both patterns makes a 6 inch tall design. The project can be made with or without paper tubes. The use of a tube just gives it more strength.
You can also enlarge the pattern to fit a plastic water bottle.
This project works best with heavier stock paper if not using a paper tube.

Thin “skinny” markers or colored pencils work great for coloring in small details in the images.

Student examples are from first grade, age 6 children.

Includes:

1 Cut and glue blank paper tube pattern handout. Fits a toilet paper tube.

1 Cut and glue animal handout sized to paper toilet tubes.

1 Black and white pre-made example, or student handout.

1 Student handout with 10 animal designs for students to look at while they draw their own. These will also fit on water bottle size designs.
