Description

Incorporate Halloween and NGSS standard 3-5 EST 1-3 into your science curriculum using this fun activity that is loaded with choices for you and your students. This activity aligns with NGSS by allowing students to design and create their own Halloween inspired science experiment. In addition to resources to guide your students in this activity, there are also 3 pre made Halloween lesson plans to use with your students in cooperative groups or as a demonstration.

Students will:

  • Develop a question and hypothesis for an experiment.
  • Create and carry out an original experiment.
  • Attempt reasonable answers to scientific questions.
  • Cite evidence to support scientific reasoning.
  • Demonstrate creativity in designing a science experiment.
  • Strengthen writing skills in a content area.

This resource includes:

  • Sneak Peek into My Classroom: Four pages of teacher tips and ideas to successfully implement this activity into your classroom.
  • Group expectations sheet: Use this for future activities. The list covers ground rules for working in groups such as noise level, work ethic, and cooperation.
  • Design a Halloween Experiment student sheets: This four-page packet will guide students through the creation of a science experiment. Students will use given materials to use to design the activity. Checkpoints are built in to ensure that students stay on the right path. Reflection questions are included to determine what was successful and where failure points were in the project.
    • TWO versions of this template are included. One has given materials already filled in. This includes common classroom materials that students can use. A second version allows YOU to fill in the materials.
  • Premade Halloween Experiments: Choose to use these three experiments as a demonstration or stations activity. Three super easy to implement activities that will reinforce basic scientific principles to engage students on Halloween. Activities include:
    • Pumpkin catapult launchers to reinforce learning of force, motion, and Newton's Laws.
    • Witches Brew to reinforce states of matter. Students will observe how a solid object can move in a liquid with the help of a gas.
    • Brains in a Jar activity that relates to the density of liquids and buoyancy.
      • These three activities come in TWO versions. Written in the scientific method format or using the CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) method. Choose which version fits the needs of your classroom.
  • Rubric to assess learning
